I’m not too sure exactly what it was about Koh Samui that won me over but this was definitely my favourite island of the trip (alongside phi phi). All of the hotels we stayed in during the trip were pretty central however with this one (Chaweng Villawee Hotel) in particular, the location was just perfect. It was off the main road, outside of our hotel was the market (and it wasn’t even noisy!), and then numerous bars, restaurants, spa parlours etc. The beach about a 5 min walk away too, as well as all the beach clubs. Everything we could’ve possibly needed was all on our doorstep. The island itself is quite small I believe, so I guess that’s why everything is so close by. Despite this, the area still didn’t seem too busy. You could walk down the street without getting haggled, and best of all it felt safe. I went out by myself for a few hours and felt completely fine (I’m yet to solo travel) would I have done this in Bangkok? Probably not.

When it came to eating in Koh Samui we were always spoilt for choice as there were so many appealing restaurants, serving/specialising in a wide range of cuisines. I would say the same goes for the bars however we ended up going to the same few bars each night; mainly because of our taste in music (they’d call it “urban”). Majority of their clubs/bars have open spaces which I prefer, similar to Croatia.

Prior to heading to Koh Samui we had planned to visit an elephant sanctuary however after arriving and enquiring about this it was much to our disappointment that the sanctuary was hours away and this sadly couldn’t fit into our itinerary. Instead of this we done a 8hr Around The Island tour which visited 8 or so attractions. This was very convenient as we had wanted to see visit most of these but planned to do so separately, which would’ve been very time consuming. The excursion can be booked at any of the tourism stalls, and several companies offer the same excursion so you will always find availability. The places included were: Big Buddha
Temple, Lad Koh Viewpoint, Mummified Monk, Na Muang Waterfall, Hin Ya & Hin Ta Rocks, Lamai Beach & Nathon Town.

Koh Samui also offers boats to the full moon parties. We didn’t actually go to one as we had planned to give this a miss from London. However once out there we slyly wished we did include it in our itinerary as it was all the talk, even the hotel staff were encouraging us to go (they attend themselves LOL). After all the encouragement we almost gave in to temptation however knew this would mean there’d be a 97% chance we’d miss our flight back to Bangkok. Therefore we decided to be sensible and keep our backsides where we were. Personally full moon seems a bit too much for me but anyway but I’ll probably attempt to go at least once; on my future Thailand travels.

We spent a total of 3 days in Phuket, but an adventurous 3 days they were.

Day 1: Trickeye Museum | Dinner & drinks.

The clue is in the name. This is a museum that plays tricks on the eyes, you stand in a certain position and have your picture taken at a particular angle and it looks as if you are actually in the painting. A really cool museum this is. Entry is 500 baht for adults which is equivalent to like £10. There’s no time limit on how long you can stay in the museum so this is definitely a fun day out.

After working up an appetite we headed to Old Town for a bite to eat and some drinks. We went to a restaurant called Rider Cafe a small but very cute family run restaurant that served a variety of cuisine. We went quite late night however the owners were still very accommodating and ensured we had a good experience. After dinner we went for cocktails at Club no.43  which was just down the road. The ambience in this bar was very cool. It was very dark with only a low light on the actual bar, with mellow music and comfortable seating. The menu had an interesting section of drinks, several cocktails that I had never heard of which is always fun.

Day 2: Phi Phi Island

So this was a whole day excursion that we booked with our hotel, but you can book literally anywhere; online or when in Thailand. You travel to Phi Phi Island via speedboat and return the same way. Phi Phi is made up of Maya Bay, Lamai beach, Monkey Island and Viking Cave. Our excursion allowed us to stop in each of these places however not all of them do, so be sure to check prior to booking whether you will just be viewing them from the boat or if you will be able to leave the boat for a while. Some of the islands offer snorkelling which is an optional extra that you can pay for however we were happy to remain on the boat/beaches and enjoy the views.

Day 3: Tiger Kingdom

So I can’t decide whether this was or Phi Phi was my favourite bit of the island but this was definitely an amazing experience. Tiger Kingdom is in Phuket itself, not too far from Patong beach. The price varies depending on the tiger/package you pick. You can choose to take photos with a single sized tiger, or combine a few sizes together. E.g. small tiger + big tiger + smaller tiger. You also have the option to use a professional photographer for an additional 550 baht I believe. If you don’t wish to do this, they will use your own device to take pictures for you however I would recommend using theirs as the photos come out amazing, and they really direct you in how to pose etc. which is helpful as who even knows how to pose with a tiger?! I opted for the smallest tiger as cubs have my heart and included the photographer so paid a total of 1800 baht? When I tell you this experience was amazing!! I know there’s a lot of talk that tigers are sedated/drugged up which I did believe myself, however after visiting the kingdom I don’t believe this as much. The cubs were very energetic, play fighting with one another and running around. They were distracted for the photos using props/food etc. I would definitely recommend this experience and there are several tiger kingdoms around Thailand so even if you aren’t travelling to Phuket, you’re still likely to find one.

So to sum up this post, I would surely recommend including Phuket in your Thailand travels.

For those of you that don't know I have just recently returned from island hopping in Thailand. Due to work restrictions myself and my friend could only spare 11 days to travel however we managed to visit a few places in this time; Bangkok, Phuket, Phi Phi island & Koh Samui. In this post I will be talking all things Bangkok.

We started our trip with two nights in Bangkok after flying in from Dubai. We technically didn't spend much time in this city as we arrived at our hotel (Maitra Hotel Sukhumvit 18) just after midnight on the Friday, and left for our next destination on the Sunday. However, it was definitely enough time as Bangkok is quite overwhelming, in my humble opinion!

The following day after arriving we went to Damnoen Saduak floating market which is just outside of Bangkok, around 1hr/1hr 30 mins drive away. There are several floating markets that are closer however after some research we discovered that this was the best rated. Our hotel easily set up a private return transfer for us for 1500 baht, which wasn't bad as the driver waited for us whilst we spent a few hours at the market. Once at the market you will be a given a few choices of excursions that you can do with the floating market such as stop at temples, monkey show, elephant trekking etc. We opted for the floating market ticket only which was around 700 or 750 baht I believe for a 2hr private boat around the market. The driver is meant to stop off at different stalls depending on whether or not you wish to buy anything, however from our experience it seemed as if our driver was simply taking us to his friend's stalls as we were stopping at places we hadn't even asked to lol. Also, after telling one of the market lady's we didn't have enough cash on us to purchase something, our driver then took it upon himself to tell every stall "credit card!" as if we had asked, we definitely didn't buy anything else after his shenanigans. All in all the floating market is something i'd recommend experiencing, it was quite therapeutic riding around on a little boat through the market and different water streams. However just be mindful that as we are tourists the thai locals will try and bump us, so be prepared to haggle prices if you do wish to buy anything! That night we took a little wander locally and ended up down a street that seemed like Bangkok's equivalent to the red light district; full of working girls looking for business. The girls must've thought we were coming for their customers as we were getting some hard stares too!

There are numerous temples in Bangkok but as we had limited time we decided on Wat Arun, War Arun Ratchawararam and the surrounding views like Temple of Dawn. Entry for Wat Arun is 100 THB, you will be required to cover your shoulders in order to enter the temples but they have cover ups available to rent if need be. The temples have specific opening times so be sure to check them before visiting, and there are last boat times (to get to the temples) so again do check these and allow plenty of time to get there and back.

Terminal 21 shopping centre was another highlight of Bangkok. With up 9 floor and each floor focusing on a different city, it's not like your usual shopping centre. From Caribbean themes, to a whole London exhibition. The 4th and 5th floors are San Francisco where you will find more than 50 restaurants and food chains, if that isn't enough to make you want to visit then...

Overall there is a lot to see and do in Bangkok, so if the city life is for you then I would recommend a visit however be prepared for the hustle and bustle. With every city obviously comes a lot of pollution and traffic, but the streets of Bangkok smell far from sweet.
